Title: Ballet...?
Rating: U
Prompt: Jetés & Lemon Squares
Summary: During a break in rehearsals...
“Jeté! Jeté! Jeté!”
At the command of their teacher, the dancers began to throw themselves across the room, legs cast apart. Nishi giggled to himself as he watched one girl take a slightly overzealous leap and stumbled on the shiny, wooden floor.
“Don’t laugh.”
Mitsu’s whispered reprimand did nothing to ease his silent laughter.
“It’s funny,” Nishi told him. “Stop trying to be the bigger man. I still remember the ‘Old-Lady-Tripping-Over’ incident.”
Mitsu struggled to hide a smile that stretched his lips as he looked up from his computer screen. “Hey, now that was funny!”
Nishi punched his companion playfully on the arm before returning his attention to the ballet girls. He stared entranced as the group eased one pose into the next. With his imagination lost in the yellow swirls of movement, he wondered what dance they were learning to perform.
“Nee, Dacchan,” he said breathlessly. “Do you know what they are rehearsing?”
Looking up from his laptop, Mitsu followed Nishi’s gaze to the dancing lumps of yellow. “I dunno. Dance of the Overgrown Lemon Squares?”
“Oi!” Nishi looked generally upset with his comment. Holding up his hands in an apologetic gesture while giving Nishi his best ‘I’m sorry’ face, Mistu watched Nishi return his attention to the dancers. Sitting on the floor, legged folded beneath him, to Mitsu he looked like a child watching a favourite television programme. This was the first time he’d seen Nishi so deeply entranced by something other than hack’n’slash video games.
“Are you enjoying it, Nishijima-kun?” Mitsu asked. Nishi didn’t answer; he merely nodded, not wanting to remove his concentration from the performance before him. “Then maybe we should go to the ballet together sometime,” he suggested.
“Ballet?”
Mitsu gave Nishi a look of confusion equal to the one fixed on Nishi’s face.
“Yeah,” Mitsu said slowly. “Those girls you’re watching…”
Nishi suddenly broke into a fit of giggles. “Chigau, chigau! I stopped watching them a while ago.”
Nishi grasped Mitsu by the shoulders and redirected his sight.
And all became clear…
In the beginning, both of them had been watching the ballet girls not through a window but in the mirror of their own rehearsal room. What Mitsu had been witnessing was the reflection of the window behind him. Nishi however had been focused on something else entirely, and now that he had seen, Mitsu had to agree it was a fantastic sight.
Through the window Mitsu had not seen was the rehearsal room next to theirs. In that room were five young men, naked to the waist and wearing only skin-tight yellow shorts. The young men were each dancing around a pole seductively and writhing their bodies in extremely suggestive ways.
Mitsu stared, his jaw hanging open. Beside him he heard another giggle before Nishi’s spoke.
“Nee Dacchan, can we go see that ballet?”
Without even needing to consider anything Mitsu answered.
“Yes, Nishijima-kun. Yes we can…”
